2022 N Wolcott Avenue, Chicago Single Family Residence

In architecture we have lost the delicate glow of fading rays.

~ Jun'ichiro Tanizaki

This development explores Tanizaki's soft, fragile beauty of feeble light. Exploring light and shadows both bold and forceful and soft and feeble, which are pushing and pulling in every direction throughout this design. A multivalent architecture where our senses connect to the space, light, colors and feeling of this design in a variety of ways.

Man walks in a straight line because he has a goal and knows where he is going; he has made up his mind to reach some particular place and he goes straight to it.

~ Le Corbusier

In an attempt to challenge some of the fallacies of the Corbusian essentialist ideology, this development explores the subtle breakdown of the ordered harmony of space. This emergent non-rational architecture does not follow the path of the perfect line. Rather, it is based on a loosely connected, fragmented space with punctured, varied volumes in an attempt to evoke exchanges of light, color and shadow.

Speed transforms the point into a line. Be fast, even while standing still.

~ Deleuze & Guittari

Inspired by the speed and rhythm of the elevated train located within sight (and sound) of the property, this renovated loft apartment began with a typical oversized apartment unit in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood. The final product was a space whose rhythm and spatial play transform into the movement and speed of an elevated train with subtle undulations and spatial variances.
